Casino Night
On Saturday, September 12, the Duarte Senior Center became a riotous
entertainment hall where gaming tables were surrounded by friends of the six
non-profits responsible for the organization and operation of the 2nd annual
Casino Night of Stars. The ceiling glowed from the gold stars representing
local businesses or personal sponsors. Guests came early, eager to sample a
variety of foods at the buffet and to take their spot at one of several
gaming tables. People anxious to have fun made for a lively audience. Jordan
Preston poured through 2 hrs. of a non-stop repertoire of songs. DART Youths
outside the entrance rushed to snap your picture, paparazzi-style, and added
to the fun. Substantial raffle gifts made for an attractive drawing. People
went away with smiles and perhaps with their picture alongside Marilyn
Monroe.
Friends of the Duarte Library represented by several
Volunteens, young adult volunteers for the Summer Reading Program, marched
in the Rt 66 Parade to advertise the Duarte Festival of
Authors as Eileen Penson, Young Adult Librarian rode in a 1965 Mustang along
with Scholarship Recipients Rozanne Vezquez, Mt Olive ’09 and Justin de la
Cruz, Duarte High School ’03, now enrolled in the PhD. program at UCLA and
doing research on the development of an HIV vaccine.
FDL was part of the City Picnic Everyone was excited to
meet Grand Marshal Zac Sunderland at the picnic and it was a busy day
selling gently-used books, sodas, watermelon cup, and cookies all for just
$1. The young ones enjoyed a twirl of the Wheel of Read to earn a trinket.
